As we sit here in Brela filled with pride that our Croatian soccer team made it to the finals of the World Cup, we can recall the church bells ringing after the England game even though it was in the very late evening. Our team represents Croatian in the true sense: strong, persistent, patriotic. Croatia, an independent country only since the 90’s, is a country about the size of the state of Washington with a population of about 6 million. It is a country where citizens remember the struggle for their freedom and they are used to hardships and sacrifice. The World Cup represented Croatia in the true sense: a country that would not give up as it fought for independence just a short time ago.
